Tonight, tonight - downtown

Neon’s blinking, the city’s wide awake—
Then take my hand and ditch that careful brake!

Good evening, citizens of Downtown! Tonight’s program includes: questionable navigation, aggressive brass, and two people about to pretend they “accidentally” ended up on a date. I’m your official witness, your unpaid chaperone, and the only person here who brought a map— which, by the way, is currently upside down and personally offended. If anyone asks, we meant to do this. If we miss the last train, please remember: romance is beautiful… cardio is not.

I planned it neat: a quiet booth, slow time,
I planned it bright: big lights and brassy shine!
I like my nights with corners, soft and small—
I like my nights where every streetlight calls!
One small step… and we’re in!

Tonight, tonight— downtown, downtown!
Where the sidewalks sparkle when we land!
Tonight, tonight— downtown, downtown!
Where trouble turns to music— off we sprint, hand in hand!

Look, I’m not against fun. I’m just… cautiously loyal to my plan.
A booth. A drink. A polite goodbye at a reasonable hour.
And I’m loyal to the city. To the moment. To the part where you stop negotiating with joy like it’s a business contract.
I’m not negotiating. I’m managing risk.
Risk? It’s a night out, not a bridge collapse.
This city moves fast.
Then move with it. You can still be careful— just don’t be afraid.
I don’t do “spontaneous.”
You do, you’re just new at it.
And what if we get lost?
Then we laugh, we improvise, we follow the music, and we end up exactly where we’re supposed to.
That sounds suspiciously like a plan.
Exactly. My plan.

The diner window shines like chrome and gold,
The trumpet laughs, the sax gets bold—
The boulevard is singing through the heat,
And even my “quiet plan” is moving to the beat.

Tonight, tonight— downtown, downtown!
Hear the brass go “pow!” and “bam!” and “hey!”
Tonight, tonight— downtown, downtown!
If we get lost, we laugh our way!

Tap report! The good news: nobody died. The bad news: my dignity filed a complaint and moved to another neighborhood. Also, did you hear that? That wasn’t just dancing— that was the city applauding with shoes. If this becomes a full finale, I want my name on a poster. Big letters. Possibly with sparkles. And if you two are about to do that thing where you look at each other like the world just got quieter— please warn me, so I can stand dramatically in the background like a professional third wheel.

Okay… I’ll admit it— that was kind of great,
That’s what I said— you’re just running late!
This city’s wild—
But you feel like home—
So let it glow, let it glow, let it glow!

I’ll bring the calm when the night runs fast—
I’ll bring the spark that makes it last!
One step, two steps— watch us spin—
The city starts, and we begin!

Tonight, tonight— downtown, downtown!
The city turns to gold!
Tonight, tonight— downtown, downtown!
If the last train leaves… we’ll walk! Be bold!
Downtown— open every door!
Hey!
